The standard call: 4,000 PSI, air entrained
Most driveways here get a 4,000 PSI mix with air entrainment built in, and that combination is not arbitrary. The strength carries the weight of everyday traffic, cars, pickups, the odd delivery van, and the air entrainment is what keeps the surface intact through a winter of freeze and thaw. Those tiny air bubbles give water somewhere to expand into when it freezes in the slab instead of pushing the surface apart from underneath.
That is the default for a reason, and for the large majority of driveways it is the right number without anybody needing to think harder about it.
When the load changes the mix
A driveway that only ever sees passenger vehicles is a different job than one that will hold a dump truck, a loaded equipment trailer, an RV, or a piece of machinery parked for a season. Weight like that calls for a stronger mix, and often more thickness to go with it, because the standard number was set against lighter, rolling loads.
There is no penalty for asking. If you are not sure whether what you park qualifies as heavy, describe it to us and we will tell you plainly whether the standard call is enough.

Where the number actually gets set
The strength you need is not something to work out from a table online. It goes on the concrete order as a spec, and the ready-mix plant's own mix design people build to it. Our part is knowing what the driveway is going to carry and putting the right number on that order before the first truck loads.
What the number does not change
Going with a stronger mix does not skip any of the prep work underneath it. The base still gets compacted, the forms still get set to the right slope, and joints still get cut on a spacing that fits the slab, whatever the strength on the order says. A stronger mix poured on a soft, uncompacted base will still move with the ground under it, because strength answers a different problem than a weak base does.
It also does not change how the slab gets treated the first month. New concrete keeps gaining strength well after it looks and feels solid, and a driveway built for heavier loads still needs the same early care, staying off the edges and easing onto it rather than turning the wheel while sitting still, before it earns the strength the mix was ordered for.
