What gets this spec on our own pours
For most of what we pour outside in this climate, the order says 4,000 PSI, air-entrained. That is not one number picked out of habit, it is two decisions made together, since the strength has to hold up under the traffic a slab will carry and the entrained air has to be there to handle a Virginia winter's freeze and thaw cycles.
That combination is what tends to show up on the flatwork most people call us for.
- Driveways, which take vehicle weight and full winter exposure
- Patios and walkways, which sit outside year round
- Garage and shop slabs where the door stays open to the weather
- Sidewalks and other exterior flatwork open to the sky
Air entrainment is part of the spec, not an add-on
The PSI number alone does not tell the whole story on exterior work. Entrained air, tiny bubbles distributed through the paste, gives water somewhere to go when it freezes instead of pushing the surface apart from underneath. A 4,000 PSI mix ordered without that air is not built for the same exposure a 4,000 PSI air-entrained mix is, even though the strength number on the ticket looks identical.
That is why the order has to say both things. Strength on its own answers how much load the slab can carry. Air entrainment answers whether it survives the winters here.
Interior work is a different question
Not everything needs this number. A slab that will never see a Virginia winter, a basement floor under a heated house or an interior footing, is a different spec entirely, closer to the lower strength class that does not carry the freeze-thaw requirement. What your particular job needs is worth confirming before concrete is ordered, not after.
