Yes, we cross the state line for Surry County work
Mount Airy sits south of us, a straight shot down the interstate and US-52 from Hillsville, and it is one of the shorter runs we make. That is a shorter drive than plenty of the Virginia addresses we pour at every week. Surry County is normal territory for this crew, not a special trip anybody has to think hard about. The state line changes the mailing address and nothing else about how the work gets done. The same crew forms it, the same crew places it, the same crew finishes it, and our own trailer line pump comes along when the site calls for one.
Concrete runs on its own clock. Once the ready-mix truck loads, the pour is happening whether the site is ready or not, so the drive gets planned around the batch schedule instead of the other way around. Twenty six miles of good road is an easy number to plan around. We are on site and set up before the first truck rolls in: forms checked and braced, base dampened, screed and finishing tools laid out where we can reach them without hunting.

Garage slabs, shop floors and outbuildings
A garage or shop slab has to do more than sit there and look flat. It carries vehicles, a jack, a lift post, a compressor, shelving loaded with everything a person owns. We build the edges thick where the walls land, place the vapor barrier under a heated or finished space, set reinforcement to the plan, and hold a slope that sends water back out the door instead of toward the back wall where it will sit.
Detached garages, barns, equipment sheds and pole buildings all get the same treatment. So do additions and new construction, where the work starts with footers and can carry on through poured walls before the flatwork ever gets talked about. The line pump for basements and backyard pours
We own a trailer-mounted line pump and run it with our own operator and a hose guy. It pushes concrete through 2.5 inch and 3 inch line, and that line size handles everything from a footing to a big flatwork pour. It is not a boom. There is no arm swinging out over the house. Other companies bring boom pumps and there are jobs that call for one, but ours is built for hose work, and hose is what most of these sites actually need.
That matters on a town lot or a wooded lot alike. We snake hose through a gate, down the side yard, around the corner of the house and out to the forms, so a backyard patio or slab gets placed properly instead of hauled a hundred feet at a time by wheelbarrow. Basement floors are the same story. The hose goes down the stairs or through a window opening and the concrete lands where it belongs.
A pump usually makes sense when the pour is a foundation, when it is roughly eight cubic yards or more, or when the ready-mix truck simply cannot get close enough to chute it. Most crews rent a pump when they hit one of those jobs. We own ours, so on our own pours the pumping is built into one price and the pump shows up when we say it will. When another contractor needs concrete moved, we do not hand over the machine. We bring our pump and our operator and do the pumping for you.

Commercial flatwork on the North Carolina side
Commercial work in Mount Airy and around Surry County is a regular part of what we do. Shop and warehouse floors, loading and equipment pads, dumpster pads, sidewalks along a storefront, entrance landings, curbing tie-ins and the approach where a lot meets the street. Flatwork on a business property has to be flat, drain where it is supposed to drain, and hold up to traffic that never lets up.
The other half of commercial work is staying out of the way. It starts with a phone call. Tell us the address, roughly what you want poured and about how big you think it is. We can give you a rough idea over the phone, but we do not pretend a phone call is a quote. We come out, measure the actual space, look at the access, the grade and the ground, talk through the options, and hand you a clear written estimate, usually within a day or two.
Crossing the line does not change any of that. Same crew, same written estimate, same standard of work. The quote spells out what we are pouring, what we are doing to the base, what finish you are getting, and whether the job calls for the pump. Our workmanship warranty is in writing, and the exact terms are confirmed on your written estimate so you are not taking anybody's word for it later.
Weather is the one thing nobody controls. Coming off the Blue Ridge the conditions can differ from what is happening at our shop, and cold weather pours get planned instead of squeezed in. If the forecast is going to hurt the finished product, we call you and move the date. A few days of waiting is cheaper than a slab that scales or crazes its first spring.
Ground, weather and the mix we spec for it
The dirt around here has opinions. Red clay holds water, swells and shrinks with the seasons, and turns to soup after a wet week. Build a slab on top of that without doing anything about it and the concrete gets blamed for a base problem. So we dig out the soft material, bring in stone, compact it in lifts and pour on something that will still be there in ten years.
Freeze and thaw is the other local fact. Winter up here cycles above and below freezing over and over, and water that soaks into a slab and then freezes will lift the surface off it flake by flake. We spec strength to the load, commonly a 4,000 PSI air-entrained mix built for Virginia freeze-thaw, because the entrained air gives that water somewhere to go instead of pushing the top layer apart.
Then it comes down to the finish and the cure. We do not overwork the surface or float water into it to make troweling easier, because that is what leads to a slab that dusts and scales later. Joints go in at sensible spacing so the concrete cracks along a line we chose. Concrete gains its strength over weeks, not hours, and we will tell you plainly what to keep off it and for how long.
