PSI rating

Definition

A PSI rating is the compressive strength a concrete mix is specified to reach once it has cured, measured in pounds per square inch. It is the number a plant designs a mix against and the number a slab is later tested to.

It is a target, not a feel

Freshly poured concrete does not tell you its PSI by how it looks or how it troweled that morning. The number gets confirmed later, off cylinders cast and cured from that same load. What matters on pour day is that the right number was ordered in the first place, since nothing done at the site afterward raises it back up if the mix was wrong to begin with.

A higher rating is not automatically the better choice. It costs more, since a stronger mix generally carries more cement, and a slab that will never carry real load does not need it. The rating is matched to the job, not maxed out by default.

Where the number gets set, and what changes it

The rating we spec depends on what is being poured and what it will face. A footing carrying a building's weight, a driveway taking vehicle traffic through winter, and an interior floor that never sees frost are three different questions, and the strength class we order reflects that. For most exterior work in this climate, the strength number gets paired with air entrainment, since a slab that is strong enough but not built for freeze-thaw can still fail at the surface.

  • The load the slab will carry
  • Whether it will face freeze and thaw outdoors
  • Whether it is structural, like a footing or a foundation wall

What shows up on the order

The PSI number is one line on the ticket, alongside whether the load is air-entrained and whether it is going through a line pump. All three get decided together before a truck is loaded, not worked out after it arrives. That is the same conversation we have with the plant on every pour we spec ourselves, and it is what keeps a slab from being strong on paper but not built for what it actually sits through.

Why the number alone is not the whole outcome

Ordering the right PSI is the start of the job, not the end of it. A correctly specified mix can still come up short if it is placed poorly, cured too fast, or if water gets added at the site to make it easier to work. None of those show up as a visible problem the day of the pour. They show up months later, as a slab that never quite reached what was on the order. That is why the number on the ticket matters alongside everything a crew does with the load after it arrives.

How is PSI actually measured?

Samples of the load are cast into cylinders at the time of the pour, cured, and later crushed in a test to see what pressure they hold. The result is reported in pounds per square inch.

What PSI does a typical driveway need?

Can a slab test lower than what was ordered?

Yes, and it usually traces back to the mix itself, curing that went wrong, or water added at the site after the load left the plant. That last one is the most common and the most avoidable, since a stronger PSI rating on the order does not protect a slab from strength lost after the truck arrives.
