What the concrete mix has to be to pump clean

A pump does not make concrete weaker, and it will not make a poor load behave. What it does is ask that load to travel through 2.5 or 3 inch hose under pressure instead of sliding down a steel chute, and not every mix is willing to do that. The difference between a pour that runs steady all morning and one that stops dead with a packed line is usually settled at the plant, on the phone, before a truck is ever loaded. This page is about what belongs on that order. Pumpability is ordered, not hoped for

Ready-mix plants build to a spec. A mix meant to slide down a chute into an open form has no reason to care about friction, because there is not any friction to speak of. That same strength, batched the same morning, can behave like a different material once it has to travel through hose.

So the first requirement is not a number. It is that the order says the concrete is being placed with a line pump. Once the plant knows, their mix design people handle the rest: how the sand and stone are proportioned, how much paste is in there, what admixtures go in. That is their trade. What they cannot do is design around a fact nobody told them.

On our own work that conversation is ours to have, and we have it before anything is ordered. For most of what gets poured in this climate we spec a 4,000 PSI air-entrained mix built for Virginia freeze-thaw, and the ticket also says the load is going through line. Strength spec and pump spec are two separate things. Both belong on the order.

Slump, and the workable middle

Slump is the plain shorthand for how stiff or how loose a load shows up. Everything about pumping sits between two failures at either end of that range, and neither end forgives you.

Stiff concrete has to be forced. Pressure climbs, the machine strains against material that does not want to move, and the load starts packing against the inside of the hose rather than sliding along it. Loose concrete fails the opposite way. Past a point the mix stops holding together as one material and separates on the move, so that what arrives at the placing end is soup, and what stays behind is a wad of stone with nothing left to carry it. That separation is how most plugs actually begin.

You will notice there is no slump figure written on this page, and that is on purpose. The right number comes off the plant's mix design for the strength and the exposure you ordered. Ask them for it, tell them the load is pumped, and let them hit the middle with proportions and admixtures at the batch plant, which is the only place it can be hit honestly.

Stone size has to suit the line

The line has a fixed inside diameter, and everything suspended in the concrete has to make that trip with room to spare around it. Aggregate that runs large against the size of the hose is the classic way to bridge the bore, where two or three stones catch each other across the opening and the rest of the load stacks up behind them.

This is where the two line sizes stop being interchangeable. The 2.5 inch line is the less forgiving of the two about top stone size. The 3 inch line has more room inside it. Neither is a reason to change what you are pouring, but it is a reason to say which line is coming when the aggregate gets picked.

Grading matters as much as the largest stone does. A load carrying a full spread of sizes, coarse down through fine, travels better than one with a gap in the middle of that spread. That is a mix design decision too. Our part is telling the plant we run 2.5 inch and 3 inch line, so the size they choose is chosen against the real hose.

Paste and sand are what carry the stone

Concrete moving through hose does not flow the way water does. It travels as a slug of material riding on a thin skin of mortar smeared against the hose wall, and that skin is doing all the work. Take enough of it away and the stone starts rubbing the wall directly, friction spikes, and the line begins to pack.

That is why a harsh mix, one short on sand and cement paste, can give trouble even when the slump looks perfectly reasonable in the chute. Slump tells you how loose the load is. It does not tell you whether there is enough mortar in it to keep everything else moving, which is also the honest reason you cannot judge a pumpable load by eye off the back of a truck.

Air entrainment still has to be there at the end of the hose

Concrete in this part of Virginia goes through freeze and thaw over and over from November on. Air entrainment is what gets specified against that, because those tiny bubbles give water somewhere to expand into when it freezes instead of pushing the surface apart from underneath. It is not an optional nicety on exterior flatwork here.

Entrained air is a property of the fresh mix, and pressure in a line is not gentle with fresh mix. So this is one more item on the list of reasons the plant needs to know the load is being pumped rather than chuted. Designed with the trip in mind, the air is accounted for. Treated as a surprise, it is a question nobody asked. The practical version is short: air-entrained mix, ordered as air-entrained, on a ticket that says it is going through a line pump.

Fiber, admixtures and whatever else is in the load

Fiber changes how a load moves. So do admixtures. Neither is a problem in itself and neither one is a reason to leave it out of a slab that calls for it, but both change the behavior of the material in the line, and that is a thing to know on the phone rather than discover with trucks lined up on the shoulder.

Set-time admixtures deserve their own mention, because they change the clock. Anything that speeds a load up shortens how long concrete can sit still in a hose before it becomes a problem. Anything that slows it down changes when the finishers get to start. If an engineer or a plan has specified something particular for your footing or your slab, we would rather read it before the concrete is ordered than hear about it at the hopper.

Nobody adds water on site to make it pump

This is the one that costs people real money, and it happens on jobs where everybody meant well. A load shows up stiffer than the last one, somebody says it will never run, and there is a water valve right there on the truck.

Water added at the site buys workability by spending strength, and you do not get that strength back. It is the most common way a slab quietly ends up weaker than what was ordered and paid for, and none of it shows until much later, when it shows permanently. A pump is not a reason to do it.

If a load genuinely will not run, that is a phone call to the plant and a decision about that truck, not a hose and a hopeful guess. Suppliers have corrections for a stiff load that do not come out of the concrete's strength, and that is what they are there for.

What a mix problem looks like when it becomes a plug

Plugs come from layout as often as from concrete, and the layout half of the story, priming and bends and how the hose gets run, belongs on our page about what a line pump does. The mix half is worth knowing because it is the half decided before pour day, by whoever placed the order.

Three mix conditions do most of the damage. Concrete too stiff to move without being forced. Concrete loose or harsh enough to come apart in the line and leave stone packed behind it. And concrete standing still, which is not a property of the mix at all but of the schedule, and which turns any load into a stiff one if it waits long enough. That last one is why truck spacing gets talked about alongside yardage.

What we want on the order before pour day

None of this is complicated to hand off. It is a short list, it goes to the plant when the concrete is booked, and it prevents nearly everything that goes wrong with a pumped load.

  • The strength spec for what is actually being poured, since a footing, a garage floor and a patio are not all the same order.
  • A line on the ticket saying the load is being placed with a line pump, and that we run 2.5 inch and 3 inch line.
  • The top aggregate size the plant intends to send, chosen against that line rather than against a chute.
  • Air entrainment for exterior work, ordered as air-entrained rather than assumed.
  • Any fiber, and any admixture, including anything that moves set time in either direction.
  • Total yardage and how you want the trucks spaced, so concrete is not standing in the line waiting on the next one.
  • A name and a number at the plant for the morning of, in case something about the load has to be sorted out while it is still in the drum.

Good questions

Does concrete have to be a special mix to run through a line pump?

Not exotic, but it does have to be ordered on purpose. The plant proportions sand, stone and paste differently when they know the load is traveling through hose, and the top aggregate size gets picked against the line. Same strength, same materials, different design. Say the word pump when you book the concrete and the supplier takes it from there.

Does pumping the concrete make the finished slab weaker?

No. What a slab ends up at is set by the mix that was batched and how it was cured, not by whether the last stretch of its trip was hose or steel. The one real risk in the neighborhood of that question is water added on site to loosen a stiff load, and that costs strength whether there is a pump on the job or not.

What slump should I ask for?

Ask your ready-mix supplier, and tell them the load is being pumped. We do not publish a figure here, because the right one falls out of their mix design for the strength and exposure you are ordering. What we can tell you is the shape of it: stiff concrete forces the machine and packs the line, loose concrete comes apart in it, and the plant hits the middle with proportions rather than with a garden hose.

Can you pump a fiber mix?

Yes, and plenty of shop floors and slabs call for one. Fiber does change how a load moves down the line, so we want to know it is coming rather than meet it at the hopper. Tell us when you book, and tell the plant that the fiber mix is going through a line pump so both ends of it are designed together.

The load looks stiff in the chute. Can we just add water?

That is the moment to call the plant instead. Water put in at the site trades strength for workability, and you never get it back or see it happen. Suppliers have ways to correct a load that do not come out of the concrete, which is exactly why the number at the plant belongs on the schedule for pour morning.

What happens if a load turns up that will not pump?

We say so before it goes in the hopper, not after it is halfway down the hose. Then it is a conversation with the driver and the plant about that particular truck. Catching it at the machine costs a few minutes. Pushing it into the line anyway costs the crew the rest of the morning.
