By the yard or by the job, and why the two numbers look so different

You looked up what concrete costs and found a price per cubic yard. Then you got a bid written per square foot, installed, and the two numbers do not look like they belong to the same job. They do not, and that is not a trick. A cubic yard measures material. A square foot of finished slab measures work. Below is what each unit counts, why we quote the second one, and how to line them up on a real pour.

A cubic yard is a box of concrete, not a piece of driveway

A cubic yard is a cube three feet on every side. That is 27 cubic feet of wet material. It is how a ready mix plant sells, how a mixer truck is loaded, and how a batch ticket is written. Nothing in that unit describes a finished surface, an edge, a joint or a slope. It counts volume and stops there.

Spread that same yard across a slab and how far it goes depends entirely on thickness. At our standard 4 inch flatwork, which is a third of a foot, one cubic yard covers 81 square feet. At 5 inches, the thickness we use under a garage floor, the same yard covers about 64.8 square feet. At the 8 inches a foundation is poured, it covers 40.5 square feet, half of what it covered at 4.

So a yard figure means nothing until somebody tells you the thickness with it. Two slabs of identical square footage can differ by half in volume, and comparing a per yard number to a per square foot number without knowing the thickness is comparing two things that were never the same measurement.

A price per yard is the mud, and only the mud

The number you found online is almost always what ready mix costs a contractor at the plant. It buys cement, stone, sand, water, admixtures, and a truck to your address. That is the whole list.

What it does not buy is most of the job. No layout. No excavation, no stripping of soft topsoil, no grade cut so water leaves the slab instead of running at the house. No compacted stone base. No forms set and staked to hold thickness and slope. No mesh or tied rebar, and nobody there to hold the steel up in the slab where it does any good. No placement, whether that is a chute, a barrow or our line pump. No finishing, no control joints cut on schedule, no cleanup, no haul off of the old slab that had to come out first, and no workmanship warranty with terms confirmed in writing on your estimate.

The material is a smaller share of the finished price than most people expect. When somebody takes a plant number, multiplies it by the yardage of their driveway and decides the bid is padded, the gap they are looking at is the rest of the work.

Why we quote by the installed square foot

We price the finished thing you will park on, one unit for the whole job. A driveway at 4 inches runs $8 to $12 per square foot installed. That single figure carries the excavation, the base, the forms, the steel, the concrete, the placement, the finish, the joints and the cleanup, so there is one number to compare against another crew's number.

Placement sits inside it because we own our line pump and run it with an operator and a hose guy, on 2.5 inch and 3 inch line. When a mixer truck cannot back up to the forms, the hose goes instead, and on our own pours that does not appear as a separate charge. Most crews rent a pump when a job calls for one, and it lands on their bill as its own line.

How the two units reconcile on one real driveway

Take a single lane drive, 12 feet wide by 40 feet long. That is 480 square feet. At the driveway band it plans out at $3,840 to $5,760 installed, and you can run that multiplication yourself.

Now the volume. At 4 inches, 480 square feet is 160 cubic feet. Divide by 27 and you get 5.9 cubic yards. Add 10 percent for waste, because forms flex, subgrade is never perfectly flat and some always stays in the chute, and you order 6.5 cubic yards.

Hold both units side by side and it gets clear. Six and a half yards is what rolls up your road. Whatever the plant charges for that is one line inside the installed price, and the rest is the work that turns a truckload of wet material into a jointed, drained slab still sitting flat in ten winters. The units are not in conflict. They are counting different things.

Loads and the waste allowance are the bridge between them

Two rules connect volume to what you pay, and once you know them the whole thing stops feeling arbitrary. First, add 10 percent to the calculated volume for waste. Ordering the exact number on the calculator is how a crew ends up short with concrete already setting in the forms. Second, ready mix comes in 10 cubic yard loads and a job rounds up to the next full load.

Work that backward and one load places roughly 730 square feet of 4 inch slab once the waste allowance is in. The 480 square foot drive above sits comfortably inside a single load. Widen that same 40 foot run to 20 feet and you are at 800 square feet, which is $6,400 to $9,600 installed, 9.9 cubic yards calculated and 10.9 with waste. Two loads, not one, for 320 more square feet.

That is the step nobody sees coming when they price a job by the yard in their head. Yardage does not scale smoothly, it jumps at the load boundary. Two driveways twenty square feet apart can sit on opposite sides of that jump, and the one just over it pays for concrete that was ordered rather than concrete that was placed.

Why a small pour costs more per square foot than a big one

This is the part the unit confusion hides. The crew, the forms, the setup, the finishing window and the delivery cost about the same whether the pour is a short walk or a full drive. Spread those across a lot of square footage and the per square foot number drops. Spread them across a small pad and it climbs.

The load rule pushes the same direction. A small pour still rounds up, so a pad using two yards and a drive using nine yards can be ordering out of the same load. Per square foot, the small one carries far more of it.

So on a job sitting near a boundary, the footage you add is the least expensive footage on the project. Sometimes the move is to trim a foot of width and stay inside a load. Sometimes it is to widen, because the concrete is coming anyway and the crew is already standing there. We will tell you which side of the line your job falls on when we measure it.

When to use each unit

Use cubic yards to check volume. It is the right unit for sanity checking a truck count and for understanding why your number stepped up when you added width. Ask any bid what thickness it is priced at and you can convert its square footage to yards in about a minute.

Use installed square feet to compare bids. That is the unit that contains the whole job, so two pages of paper can be laid side by side and read against each other. What does not work is comparing across the units. A per yard figure held against a per square foot figure will always make the installed price look high, because one of them is a shopping list with one item on it. Ask for both on the same page instead, which is what our written estimate gives you.

Good questions

How many square feet does one cubic yard of concrete cover?

It depends entirely on thickness. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so at 4 inches it covers 81 square feet, at 5 inches about 64.8 square feet, and at 8 inches 40.5 square feet. That is why a coverage figure quoted without a thickness beside it does not tell you anything useful.

Why does your written estimate not list a price per cubic yard?

Because a yard price only covers the material, and the material is one line in a job that also includes excavation, base, forms, steel, placement, finishing and cleanup. Do I pay for the 10 percent waste allowance even if it is not all used?

The allowance sits inside the installed square foot price, not on a separate line afterward. Ordering the exact calculated volume is how a pour comes up short, and a cold joint in the middle of a slab costs more than the extra material.

What happens when my pour lands just over a 10 cubic yard load boundary?

It rounds up to the next full load, so a job at 10.9 yards orders two loads the same as a job at 19 yards would. Once you are over the line, extra footage is the least expensive footage on the job. Should I compare two concrete bids by the yard or by the square foot?

By the installed square foot, and only after checking that both bids are priced at the same thickness. A yard figure tells you about volume, not about the base under the slab, the reinforcement in it or how the concrete reaches the forms.
