Short and over are not opposite mistakes of the same size
Put the two outcomes side by side and the reason crews order long stops being a mystery.
Order a bit over and here is the worst case. There is concrete left when the forms are full. The crew widens an edge, thickens an apron, throws a small pad at the base of a step, and what genuinely does not get used is a modest amount of material inside a price you already agreed to. Nobody is standing around, nothing about the slab is different, and the day ends when it was going to end.
Order exactly what the calculator said and come up short and it is a different kind of day. The concrete already in the forms does not wait. Somebody calls the plant, the plant sends what it can, and everything now depends on how long that takes. The finishers who were on a rhythm are watching the surface stiffen where they cannot get to it yet. If the wait runs long, the new concrete will not knit to the old one and you own a cold joint, which is a line across the slab that no amount of finishing removes.
That asymmetry is the entire answer. One mistake costs a little material. The other costs the slab a permanent feature. Given the choice, every crew that has been short once orders long from then on.
Where the volume goes that the calculator never counted
The arithmetic is honest as far as it goes. Length times width times thickness in feet, divided by 27, gives cubic yards. What it assumes is a perfect box, and a job site is not a box. The extra is not padding, it is the difference between a rectangle on paper and a hole in the ground.
Here is where it actually goes.
- Formwork flexes. A long run of forms bows outward under the weight of wet concrete, so a slab set at 4 inches finishes a shade fatter in the middle of the run than at the stakes.
- Subgrade is never a plane. Every low spot in the stone gets filled with concrete, at concrete prices, because the top of the slab is flat whether the bottom is or not.
- Edges over dig. A trench, a turndown edge or a footing cut with a machine is generous by nature, and generous costs volume.
- Some always stays behind. Concrete clings in the tail of a chute, in a barrow, in a hopper and in the line on a pumped pour.
- Thickness gets rounded up in practice. Nobody screeds a slab thin to hit a number, so real thickness sits a touch over nominal across most of the pour.
Ten percent is a starting point, not a law
Ten percent over the calculated volume is the figure to work with and it covers most flatwork on a well prepared site. It is a rule of thumb rather than a constant, and the honest version is that some jobs want more of a cushion and some want less.
Carry more when the ground is doing the deciding. A footing trench dug rather than formed, a rocky or uneven subgrade, a long thin run of forms, a hillside where grade was cut by eye rather than screeded off a string. All of those swallow volume in ways nobody can measure ahead of time.
Ten is plenty when the site is tight. A formed slab sitting on a compacted stone base that somebody proof rolled and screeded flat is close to the box on paper, and it behaves like it. That is one of the quieter payoffs of doing the base properly, and it is the same preparation that keeps the slab flat in ten winters.
The load boundary decides whether the cushion costs anything
Ready mix comes in 10 cubic yard loads and a job rounds up to the next full load, so where your pour lands against that boundary changes whether the extra is free or expensive.
Take a 24 by 24 garage slab at 5 inches. That is 576 square feet, which is 240 cubic feet, which is about 8.9 cubic yards calculated. Add the cushion and you are at roughly 9.8 yards. Both numbers fit inside one load, so on that job the extra 10 percent costs nothing at all in delivery. It is the clearest case there is for ordering long rather than shaving it fine.

What happens to the part that does not go in the forms
The short version is that most of it gets used. A crew with concrete left over has a list of small useful places to put it, and a homeowner standing there usually has one too.
