What a soft spot looks like under load
A base that has been properly compacted holds still under weight. A spot that has not, or that is sitting over wet clay that never firmed up, does something different: it flexes, it ruts, or it pumps a little water up to the surface as the load passes over it. That reaction is the whole point of the check. It shows up under a loaded truck long before it would ever show up as a crack in a finished slab.
Most floors that come back with a problem later trace back to exactly that kind of spot, missed because nobody drove over it before the concrete went on top.
- Flexing or springing under the wheel as the load passes over.
- A rut left behind where the load rolled through.
- Water pumping up to the surface under repeated passes.
Why it happens before forms and steel, not after
A soft spot found while the ground is still open is a stone and compaction fix, worked in and rolled again until it holds. The same soft spot found after the slab is poured is a different job entirely, and a much bigger one. That is why checking the base is one of the last steps before forms go up, not something left for later in the schedule.
It matters most under anything that is going to carry real weight: a garage floor, a driveway, a foundation footing. A sidewalk that only ever carries foot traffic is a lower stakes version of the same question.
What it takes the place of guessing
Without a check like this, the only way a soft spot in the base gets found is after the slab is poured on top of it, when it settles or cracks and there is no good way to know why without cutting into the concrete itself. Running a loaded truck or roller over the compacted base first turns that into a question you can answer while the ground is still open and the fix is still cheap.
It is a simple check, not a complicated one. There is no special equipment involved beyond something heavy enough to load the ground the way the finished slab and whatever sits on it eventually will.
