Speeding up the chemistry
Concrete gains strength through hydration, the reaction between cement and water that locks the mix together. Hydration runs slower in cold weather, the same way most chemical reactions do, and a slab that would reach a safe strength in a day during August can take two or three times as long once the temperature drops toward freezing.
Calcium chloride speeds that reaction up. It does not add strength on its own and it does not change what the concrete will test at once it is fully cured. What it changes is the clock: the same mix reaches the same early strength sooner, which is the entire point in a season where the slab is racing a freeze.
The window before a freeze
Fresh concrete is full of water, and water that has not yet reacted with the cement can still freeze. Ice crystals forming inside a slab before it has built enough strength push the paste apart from the inside, and that damage does not heal itself. The slab has to get past that vulnerable window before a hard freeze finds it.
Calcium chloride shortens the window. It does not make the slab freeze proof and it is not a substitute for protecting a pour on a genuinely cold night. It buys the mix time by getting the chemistry moving faster from the start.
Where it goes on the order, not on site
This is a mix design decision, made with the plant before the truck is loaded, the same way air entrainment and strength spec are. The dose is measured against the cement content and the weather, not added at the site out of a bag or a jug once the load has arrived.
On our own pours, cold weather concrete is a conversation we have with the plant ahead of the date, so the accelerator, the air entrainment and the strength spec all land on the same ticket. When we sub the pumping for another contractor's job, that mix decision belongs to their supplier.
- The strength spec for the slab being poured
- Air entrainment, ordered as air entrained for anything exterior
- Calcium chloride or another accelerator, dosed against the forecast
- A protection plan for the first cold night if the forecast calls for one
What it does not do
Calcium chloride is not a replacement for air entrainment, which is the separate admixture that protects a cured slab from years of freeze and thaw cycles once it is in service. It is also not a reason to skip protecting fresh concrete on a genuinely hard freeze, with insulation or a curing blanket over the slab while it gains its first strength.
There is also a dosage ceiling. More is not simply better. Too much calcium chloride in a mix with steel in it raises the risk of corrosion on that steel over time, which is why the plant controls the dose rather than a crew adding it by feel on site.
