What is fly ash in a concrete mix?

The short answer

Fly ash is a fine byproduct of burning coal that some ready mix plants blend in to replace part of the portland cement in a mix. It improves workability while the concrete is fresh and can add long term durability, but it slows down how fast the mix gains strength in the first days, which matters most in cold weather or on a tight schedule.

A cement replacement, not an additive

Fly ash is not mixed in on top of the cement. It replaces a portion of it, so a load with fly ash in it has less portland cement and a percentage of fly ash standing in for the rest. The batch plant makes that call as part of the mix design, weighed against the strength and the schedule the job needs.

What it does while the concrete is fresh

Fly ash particles are finer and rounder than cement particles, and that shape helps the fresh mix flow more easily and finish smoother, with less water needed to get the same workability. Less water for the same workability lowers the water to cement ratio, and a lower water to cement ratio is generally good for the concrete's long term strength and durability, so the tradeoff often works in the mix's favor.

What it does to the schedule

The tradeoff is speed. Fly ash reacts more slowly than portland cement, so a mix with a meaningful percentage of it gains strength more slowly in the first days, even though the strength it eventually reaches can match or exceed a straight cement mix. That is a fine tradeoff on a summer job with time to spare and no rush to load the slab.

It is a worse fit on a cold weather pour, where the goal is often getting the mix to a safe strength before the next hard freeze, or on any job where the schedule calls for stripping forms or getting equipment back on the slab quickly. On those jobs the plant typically dials fly ash back or leaves it out in favor of a straight or accelerated mix.

How much goes into the batch

There is no single fixed amount. The percentage of fly ash in a given load is a range the plant sets against the strength spec and the season, higher when there is time to spare and the durability upside is worth leaning into, lower or none at all heading into a cold snap where every hour of early strength counts.

That is also why two loads of the same PSI mix, ordered on two different weeks, can carry different amounts of fly ash and still both meet spec. The strength number on the order stays the same. What changes underneath it is how the plant gets there.

Where the decision gets made

Fly ash content is a mix design call, made with the batch plant when the concrete is ordered, the same way strength and air entrainment are. On our own pours we leave that decision to the conversation with the supplier, weighed against the season and the schedule for that specific job, not applied the same way to every pour regardless of when it happens.

Good questions

Does fly ash make concrete weaker?

Not at full cure, in a properly designed mix. It gets there more slowly, which is the actual tradeoff, not a lower ceiling on the strength.

Is fly ash concrete a different color?

It can run slightly lighter or darker depending on the source and the percentage used, though it is not something most people notice once the slab is finished and cured.

Can fly ash concrete be pumped?

Yes, and the finer particle size in fly ash often helps a load move through hose more easily. The plant still needs to know the load is being pumped so the rest of the mix is proportioned against that.

Should I ask for fly ash by name?

You can, but it is usually more useful to tell us the schedule and let the mix design follow from that. Say when you need to load the slab and whether the pour is heading into cold weather, and the fly ash content sorts itself out from there.
