What sits on the pad, and what does not
A silage pad is the floor a bunker silo or a silage pile sits on, not the storage system itself. Some pads have a push wall down one or both sides so a loader can pack the pile against something solid. Others are just a flat apron with the pile built up in the open. Either way, the pad is the part we pour. What holds the pile up, if anything does, is a separate structural decision that gets made with the layout, not added on afterward.
Concrete floor versus an ag bag: two ways to store the same crop
There is more than one honest way to store silage, and which one fits depends on volume and how long the feed sits before it gets used.
- A concrete pad suits a farm packing and feeding out silage year after year in the same spot, where a loader works the pile daily through wet and dry seasons alike.
- An ag bag needs no concrete at all. It is a real option for smaller volumes or where the storage spot changes from season to season, and it is the right answer for plenty of operations.
- A pad earns its cost where a loader is on it constantly, since dirt under repeated heavy traffic ruts and pulls mud into the base of the pile every time it rains.
- A dirt or gravel floor under a pile also lets effluent from the silage seep straight into the ground instead of running off where you want it to go.
Why the floor takes more than a driveway does
A silage pad is not walked on, it is driven on, over and over, by a loaded payloader packing the pile tight, in every kind of weather the crop gets brought in under. We spec strength to that load rather than to foot traffic, commonly a 4,000 PSI air entrained mix built for Virginia freeze thaw, the same call we make on a shop floor that sees equipment and winter weather both.
Joints get cut on a grid the same as any slab, since concrete shrinks as it cures no matter what sits on top of it. On a pad that gets driven on daily, we lay the cut pattern out of the main travel lane where a wheel crosses it hardest.
Walls, if the layout calls for them
A push wall is a separate piece of concrete with its own footing, not a taller edge on the floor pour. If your layout includes one, that gets planned with the pad rather than bolted onto it after the fact, the same way a foundation gets settled before a floor goes in on any building.
Getting a loader onto ground that will not hold a truck
A lot of silage pad sites sit on soft ground precisely because that is where the crop gets stored, which is not always where a ready mix truck can get close. Where walls are already up or the site will not carry a truck all the way in, we run our own trailer line pump on 2.5 and 3 inch line to reach the pour, the same way we do on a shop floor inside a standing building. The truck stays on ground that will hold it, and the pad gets placed at one steady pace instead of a crew hauling it in by hand.
