The straight lines cut into your driveway
Walk out to almost any concrete driveway or patio and you will find straight grooves cut into the surface, laid out in a grid or running across at intervals. Those are control joints, and they are there on purpose, cut in before the concrete has fully set rather than added later.
Look closely at one and you will often find a thin crack sitting right inside it. That is not a coincidence and it is not a defect. It is the joint doing exactly the job it was cut to do.
Why the crack is supposed to be there, not somewhere else
Concrete shrinks a small amount as it cures, and it is bonded to the ground under it and to its own edges, so that shrinkage cannot happen freely. The tension has to release somewhere, and left alone, it picks its own spot, often a random line across the middle of a driveway or patio.
A control joint is a groove cut close to a quarter of the way through the slab's own thickness. That thinner spot is weaker than the rest of the slab, so when the tension finally releases, it happens along the groove instead of wherever the concrete happens to be at its weakest that day. The joint does not stop the crack. It decides where the crack goes.
Why the cut happens on day one, not later
Timing is not cosmetic. Control joints get cut within the first day after the pour, while the concrete is still green enough to cut cleanly but has already started that early shrinkage. Cut too late, and the slab may have already found its own crack line before the joint is there to catch it.
That is one reason a straight-line crack showing up right after a pour is not alarming on its own. If it lines up with where a joint was cut, or with where one is about to be cut, the timing is exactly what it should be.
What a joint is not
A control joint is not the same thing as an expansion joint. A control joint manages shrinkage inside one continuous slab. An expansion joint is a full separation, often a strip of compressible material, between two different pours, like where a driveway meets a garage floor or a sidewalk meets a foundation, and it lets each side move a little independently instead of pushing against the other.
A control joint is also not decorative. The layout follows the shape and size of the slab, not a pattern chosen for looks, and moving a joint to somewhere that suits the eye instead of the concrete usually just means the crack shows up somewhere else instead.
