Expansion joint versus control joint
A control joint is a shallow groove, cut or tooled partway through a single slab, that gives shrinkage cracking a straight line to follow instead of a random one. It does not go all the way through the concrete, and it lives inside one continuous pour.
An expansion joint is a different thing entirely. It runs the full depth of the slab, it is an actual gap rather than a groove, and it sits wherever your concrete meets something that will not shrink and move the way the slab does, another slab, a foundation wall, a fixed post. The filler inside it compresses and lets go as the concrete expands and contracts with the seasons.
Where an expansion joint actually goes
You will find one wherever two separate pieces of concrete meet, or wherever concrete meets something rigid that was built at a different time.
- Where a driveway meets the garage floor slab
- Where a sidewalk meets a building foundation or a set of steps
- Where a patio meets an existing slab it was poured against
- Around a fixed post, column, or utility structure set in the concrete
Why the gap has to be there in the first place
Concrete moves with temperature more than people expect, expanding a little in summer heat and pulling back in winter cold. A single continuous slab can absorb that movement on its own, but two separate pieces of concrete, or a slab sitting against a foundation that was poured on a different day, do not move in step with each other. Without a gap between them, that mismatch pushes one edge against the other every time the temperature swings.
Over enough cycles, that pressure has to go somewhere. It shows up as a chipped or spalled edge right at the seam, or a crack that starts exactly where two pours meet. An expansion joint is what keeps that pressure from ever building up in the first place.
What the gap is filled with
The gap itself is not left open. A compressible filler, commonly a fiber board strip or a flexible sealant, sits in the joint so it can squeeze down when the concrete expands in the heat and open back up when it contracts in the cold. Leave that gap empty or pack it with something rigid and the joint cannot do its job, the two pieces of concrete push against each other instead of sliding past.
