Start by listing what parks, turns and stops on it
Thickness is not a preference, it is a load question, and the load is something you already know better than we do. Before anybody talks about inches, walk the drive and count what actually uses it. Not what used it once, and not what might use it someday, but what comes and goes through a normal year.
That list is the whole basis for the call. A drive that only ever sees two cars and the trash truck out at the road is a different slab from one where a tractor turns around on it twice a week.
- Daily vehicles, and where each one habitually parks
- Anything you tow, loaded, and where the trailer sits when it is dropped
- An RV or a camper, including where the jacks come down
- Delivery and service trucks, and how far up the drive they come
- Equipment, firewood loads, or a dump body backing in
- The turnaround, if there is one, since turning tires work a slab harder than rolling ones
The inches get cut into the ground before any concrete is ordered
Here is the part most people do not picture. Thickness is not something added on pour day. It is dug. When we cut the grade we are cutting to the bottom of the stone base, the stone comes up to the bottom of the slab, and the forms are set to the top of it. By the time a ready mix truck is on the road, the thickness has already been built into the hole.
That is why the load conversation happens at the estimate and not while concrete is coming out of the chute. Once the forms are staked and the base is compacted to grade, a heavier slab means pulling stone back out and resetting form boards. It is not impossible. It just costs a day that did not need to be spent.
Thicken the apron and the parking spots instead of the whole drive
A driveway does not take the same beating end to end. Two stretches take almost all of it. The apron, where you leave the road and every wheel in the household crosses the same line, and the strip in front of the garage or shop, where vehicles stop, sit and turn against the surface. In between, on a straight run that only gets driven over, four inches is doing fine.
So we spend the extra concrete where the punishment is. If a trailer always drops in the same corner, that corner gets built for it. If the RV pad sits off to one side, it gets formed thicker and reinforced while everything is still open. Pouring an entire drive at five or six inches to protect two spots is money going into the parts of the slab that were never at risk.
Reinforcement runs alongside that decision rather than replacing it. Wire mesh is the common choice and a tied rebar grid is the upgrade, but steel does not turn a thin slab into a thick one. It is a separate question and we walk through it with you at the same visit.
What another inch does to the order and to the number
Thickness changes two things you can see on paper: how much concrete gets ordered, and where you land inside the price range. The volume math is simple enough to do yourself. Turn the thickness into feet, multiply by the square footage, divide by 27, then add about ten percent for waste. Moving from four inches to five on the same area puts roughly a quarter more concrete in the ground.
On price, a concrete driveway in our counties runs $8 to $12 per square foot installed. A thicker slab does not put you into some other band. It moves you up inside that one, because it is more material and more labor on the same footprint. Thickness will not rescue a bad base
One honest warning to close on. Concrete is strong when it is pressed and weak when it is bent, so a slab bridging a soft spot cracks whether it is four inches thick or six. Extra depth buys a little more span and nothing close to enough to cover for ground that was never dealt with. Strip the soft material, compact the subgrade, build the base back up with stone, and then pick the thickness for the load.
If somebody quotes you a six inch driveway sitting on a thin base, you are paying for the wrong half of the slab.
