What a patio is actually holding up
Add up what lives on a patio. A table and chairs. A grill. Planters. Ten people at a cookout, standing, which sounds like a lot and is spread across twenty feet of slab. None of that comes close to loading four inches of concrete on firm ground to its limit. A patio is not a driveway with a table on it, and it is nothing like a shop floor.
That is why four inches has been the working section for outdoor living flatwork for a very long time. The failures we get called out to look at on patios are almost never about depth. They are slabs that were poured on ground that held water, or slabs with joints in the wrong places, or slabs that were pitched back toward the house. Depth was not the problem on any of them.
The mix matters a great deal more here than the depth does. Outdoor slabs at this elevation are commonly poured in a 4,000 PSI air entrained mix, and the air entrainment is the part doing the quiet work. Those tiny voids leave room for water to expand when it freezes, rather than the surface coming off a flake at a time over a run of hard winters. Four inches in the right mix will outlast six inches in the wrong one.
An inch of depth versus a few more feet of patio
Here is the trade nobody puts in front of you. Concrete is sold by volume and patios are lived in by area. Every inch you add goes into the ground under your feet where you will never see it, and it comes out of the budget that could have bought you square footage, a stamped finish, or the steps that connect the patio to the back door on the same trip.
So when somebody asks whether to go five inches for peace of mind, what we usually say is: put that money into being able to pull the chairs back from the table. Most patios people regret are too small, not too thin. The ones that fail are not too thin either.
Rectangles are the cheapest shape to form and finish, so if the budget is what is driving the thickness question, shape is a bigger lever than depth is. Keep the outline simple and spend the difference on the part you will actually use.
The hot tub is the real exception
A hot tub full of water with people in it is a genuinely heavy load standing on a small footprint, and it sits in the same spot forever. That section gets poured thicker, usually six inches with reinforcement worked into it, and that thicker section gets formed on the same day as everything around it, so what you end up with is one continuous surface. It is one slab, not a patch set in beside one.
That means we need to know before the forms go down. Give us the make and model at the estimate, or the filled weight if you have it. A thicker pad added afterward means saw cutting a finished patio, breaking concrete out and pouring twice, and the seam it leaves is permanent.
The same logic covers anything else that parks in one place and stays: an outdoor kitchen run with a stone counter on it, a large fixed smoker, a masonry fire pit built up off the slab. Say it at the estimate and it costs almost nothing. Say it after and it costs a saw.
What four inches of patio costs, and what moves the number
Broom finished patios and walkways at four inches run $9 to $14 per square foot installed. Stamped and decorative work runs $14 to $22. A tied rebar grid adds $0.75 to $1.25 per square foot over wire mesh, and tearing out an old slab first adds $2 to $3.
Where you land in a band comes down to access, tear out, site prep, and how much of the outline has to be bent and staked by hand, not to a fraction of an inch of depth. That is the point worth taking away: on a patio, thickness is close to the last thing on the list of what drives your price, which is exactly why it is the wrong place to economize and the wrong place to splurge.
