Two clocks run on a pour, and a pump only moves one of them
The first clock is placing: getting concrete out of the truck and into the forms. The second is finishing: screeding, floating, edging, jointing and troweling it into a surface. People asking how much time a pump saves are almost always thinking about the whole day, and the whole day does not shrink by the same amount, because a line pump has nothing to do with the second clock.
Concrete can only be worked at the speed a crew can work it. Bring it to the forms twice as fast and the finishers are simply standing in it. That is why we will not answer this question with a number of hours over the phone. What a pump does is take transportation out of the middle of the day and hand those minutes back to the people doing the finishing.
The working window is the thing actually being saved
Concrete is a reaction running on a clock, and the clock starts at the plant rather than when the first barrow rolls. There is a stretch between a load being batched and the point where it has gone too stiff to place and finish the way it should. A pump does not lengthen that stretch. It stops you from spending most of it on carrying.
Which is why the time question and the quality question are the same question. A placement that runs long lets the first end of the slab start setting before the last end arrives, which is how a cold joint ends up through the middle of something that was drawn as one piece. A long pour also invites somebody to loosen a stiffening load so it moves easier, and water poured in at the truck is the thing that genuinely costs you strength. Neither of those looks like a scheduling problem on paper. Both of them are what a stretched placing clock buys you.
Setup comes off the front of the day, not out of the middle
A fair worry about bringing a machine to a pour is that the machine itself takes time. It does, and none of it lands on your window. The trailer gets parked, the route gets walked, the hose gets laid and the line gets primed before the first truck backs in. By the time concrete is on site the machine is already working.
That order is not a courtesy, it is the only way it works. Building the layout while a loaded truck sits waiting is how a morning falls apart, and priming is not something anybody skips for ten minutes, because nothing travels a dry line without grabbing at it. Tell us the delivery time you asked the plant for and the setup gets planned backward from it.
The third clock belongs to the plant, and it is the one nobody counts
A ready-mix truck standing on your site while people work through the drum is a truck the plant is not using anywhere else. On a hand hauled pour of any size that is worth raising with your supplier while the day is still being planned rather than reading about it afterwards.
With hose in the picture the drum empties at whatever rate the crew can absorb, so trucks turn and go. Run the arithmetic and you can see why the answer changes so sharply with yardage. A ready-mix load is treated as 10 cubic yards, and a barrow holds a small fraction of that, so emptying one truck by hand takes far more round trips than the number people picture. Three loads is a different day entirely, and the trips get slower as they go, over ground that is already rutted and a plank that has gone slick.
None of that makes a pump the right call on a short flat haul. If a truck backs up and the chute reaches the forms, gravity is faster than any machine and there is no clock to save.
