The decision happens before the truck is booked
Weather sets the pour date more than anything else does, and winter is where that shows up the most. A slab that freezes before it sets is a slab that gets poured twice, so a hard freeze in the forecast for pour day or the night right after it is reason enough to move the date instead of chasing it.
That is a scheduling call, not a curing one, and it happens before any concrete gets ordered. Once the forecast clears enough to pour safely, the curing clock starts the same way it would any other time of year, just running slower.
Why the reaction slows down in the cold
Concrete cures through a chemical reaction between the cement and water, and that reaction is temperature sensitive. Warm concrete cures faster because the reaction runs faster. Cold concrete cures slower because it does not. Below a certain point the reaction all but stalls, which is the real danger in a winter pour, the reaction stopping while the slab is still too weak to survive a freeze, not the cold itself.
That is why a winter pour gets more attention right after it goes down than a summer one does. Keeping the concrete's own curing heat in, rather than letting cold air pull it away, is what keeps that reaction moving instead of stopping.
What actually stretches
Every milestone in the cure moves out, not just one of them. Walking on it, driving on it, and reaching full strength all take longer in cold weather than the ranges we give for a warm-weather pour, and how much longer depends on how cold the nights stayed and for how long.
A mix designed to gain strength faster, sometimes called a high early mix, can shorten some of that wait on jobs where the schedule cannot flex. It does not erase winter's effect on the cure entirely, it just gets the slab further along before the cold has a chance to slow it down.
We are not going to put a single winter number on that here, because the swing between a mild stretch and a hard cold snap is too wide to be one honest answer. What we give you instead is cure guidance specific to your pour and the forecast it went down in, and that is the number that actually applies to your slab.
Getting through that first winter
A slab that goes down close to winter, or has not made it through its first one yet, needs a little more care than an older one.
- Keep vehicles and heavy loads off longer than you would in warm weather
- Use sand, not salt, for traction through the first winter
- Ask about cure guidance specific to your pour before assuming a general timeline applies
