It is already warm before the sun is properly up, the ready mix truck is backing to the forms, and the crew is moving with more urgency than they would on a mild spring morning. That pace is not nerves. Heat changes the clock the whole crew is working against, and everybody on site knows it.
On a day like that, the same mix that might give a crew a comfortable window in April can start firming up noticeably faster, and the surface can begin to skin over while the concrete underneath is still soft and workable.
That contrast is the whole reason summer pours get planned differently than the rest of the year. It is not just about crew comfort. It is about staying ahead of a set time that is actively getting shorter while the truck is still on its way.
Why the crew starts before the heat does
We pour most of the year here and work around the forecast, not the season, and in summer that means starting early. Getting concrete placed and into its finishing window before the afternoon heat is at its worst buys the crew more usable working time, not less pressure once the sun is fully up.
The reason comes back to the same thing that governs curing generally: the faster surface moisture disappears, especially in sun and wind, the weaker and more likely to dust or crack that top layer ends up. Heat and wind both pull moisture out of the surface faster, so a hot, breezy day shortens the window the crew has to work in more than heat alone would.
None of this changes what goes into the mix. The same design that gives a comfortable window in spring is doing the same job in July, just faster, because heat speeds up the chemical reaction driving the set the same way it speeds up almost any reaction.
What a surface skinning over too fast looks like
A slab setting too fast in the heat does not usually look dramatic. It looks like a surface that has firmed up and gone dull while the concrete an inch below it is still plastic and workable, a mismatch that makes finishing harder to time correctly.
None of that means the slab is ruined. It means the crew has less margin for error and less time between steps, which is exactly why an early start and a crew that is not surprised by heat matters more on those days than any other.

On the hottest days, some pours get a curing compound put on early rather than waiting, since a sprayed-on compound seals moisture in immediately instead of relying on a timing window that heat has already shortened. Hoses, sprinklers and heavy foot traffic still stay off regardless of which method a given pour gets.
None of that changes the price or the finish you picked. It changes when the crew shows up and how tight the sequence looks once they are there, not what the slab ends up being.
Cold does the opposite
Heat and cold pull in opposite directions. A hot mix needs managing so it does not set before the finish goes on. A cold mix needs managing so it does not freeze before it has set at all. How long a pour needs to protect itself through a cold snap is its own question, with its own answer.
Both directions come back to the same idea: heat and cold do not change what concrete is doing, they change how fast it does it, and the crew's job on either extreme is staying ahead of that pace instead of chasing it.
