A soft, rutted edge running alongside the driveway
A washed out shoulder usually shows up as a low, soft strip of dirt or gravel running along the edge of a concrete driveway, cut by small channels where water has run across it repeatedly. Step on it and it gives underfoot in a way the concrete next to it does not.
Where it happens tells you a lot. A wash out that starts right where a downspout empties, or right below a slope coming off the yard, has an obvious source. A wash out running the full length of the drive usually means the driveway itself is shedding water off its edge faster than the shoulder can carry it away.
- Small channels or ruts cut into the dirt or gravel next to the slab
- The shoulder sits visibly lower than it did originally, especially near a downspout or a low spot
- Loose gravel or fines washed downhill, leaving bare or rutted dirt behind
Why dumping more gravel on top does not hold
The easy fix, and the one that does not last, is dumping a load of loose gravel into the low spot and calling it done. Loose fill has nothing holding it in place, so the next hard rain moves it the same way it moved everything that used to be there.
A shoulder that is going to hold has to be compacted in, not just piled on, the same way the stone under a slab is brought up in lifts and compacted as it goes rather than dumped in one shot.
Fixing where the water is coming from
A shoulder that keeps washing out almost always has a water source doing it, and regrading the dirt without addressing that source buys you one season at most. A downspout discharging right onto the shoulder, a slope that was never regraded after the driveway went in, or water sheeting off the concrete itself at a spot with no crown, are the usual culprits.
Redirecting a downspout further from the edge, or re-pitching the last few feet of yard so water spreads out instead of concentrating in one channel, often does more for a washed out shoulder than the fill itself does.
When the wash out has gotten under the concrete edge
Sometimes what looks like a shoulder problem has actually gone further, and water has carried the fines out from under the last foot or so of the slab itself, not just the dirt beside it. That shows up as the edge of the concrete sounding hollow underfoot, or a hairline gap opening between the slab and the shoulder that was not there before.
That is no longer a shoulder repair. It is a base problem under the edge of the concrete, and it gets handled the way any undermined slab does, which our tear out and replacement page covers.
What a proper shoulder repair looks like
Done right, a shoulder repair regrades the low spot, brings in crusher run stone in compacted layers rather than one loose dump, and reshapes the slope so water moves across it and away instead of pooling and cutting a new channel.
- Regrade the low, rutted area back to the original slope
- Bring stone up in compacted layers, not one loose pile
- Redirect or correct whatever water source caused the wash out in the first place
