The trench is the reason, not the yardage
Stand at an open footing trench and the problem shows itself. The trench runs the shape of the building. The truck can reach one corner of that shape at best, and the far end of the run is nowhere near a chute. Concrete that lands short of where it belongs then gets moved sideways with shovels, in a trench with steel in it, by people who would rather be doing anything else.
That is what a line pump takes off the day. The discharge end goes to the concrete's destination instead of the concrete traveling to wherever the chute happened to reach. On a footing the hose walks the run and fills as it goes, so the trench comes up evenly and nobody is chasing material.
The steel in the trench is what the hose has to work around
The obstacle in a footing is rarely the ditch. It is the cage sitting in it. Bars run the length of the run top and bottom, rebar chairs hold them up off the dirt, and dowels stand vertical wherever a wall or a column is coming. All of that has been set and tied, and often signed off, before there is any concrete on the road.
So the material gets dropped in from above rather than pushed along the bars, with the end held steady so it is not swinging into the steel on every stroke. Say where the verticals stand, and look over your tie wire before pour morning, because a cage that shifts on the first lift is a bad way to open a day.
Stepped footers down a bank are the normal version here
Level ground is the exception on a Blue Ridge lot, so footings that step down a slope are routine rather than a complication. Each step is a small pour with its own bottom, and the run gets filled step by step as the placing end reaches it, working from the far end back toward the way out.
Setup is the part worth planning on a site like that. An excavated foundation has a spoil pile somewhere, ground that a track machine has been over all week, and one flat spot that the ready-mix truck may also want. The trailer needs firm ground within hose reach, usually well back from the edge of the hole, and line gets run down the grade from there.
A footing pour is about control, so the pace comes down
A slab is judged on how fast the concrete keeps arriving. A trench is judged on how precisely it stops. There is only so much room between two walls of dirt, and material that goes past the top of the form is material somebody lifts back out by hand.
So the machine gets held at a pace that suits a narrow target, and the man on the placing end feeds a stretch, steps along, and comes back for the rest of it. That is a slower way to run a pump than a driveway would be, and the way it gets set up is you telling us on the phone which one you are pouring.
Footings we pour, and footings we place for somebody else
Both are normal work. We take whole foundation scopes, forming, placing and finishing footers and walls ourselves, commonly on a 4,000 PSI air-entrained mix built for Virginia freeze-thaw, with a workmanship warranty in writing and the exact terms confirmed on your written estimate. We also do the pumping for crews who have the forms, the steel and the finish handled and want the concrete placed where they point.
One thing sets the date more often than we do. Anything structural, a garage, an addition, a retaining wall taller than three feet, has to be permitted, and the footing gets inspected before any concrete is placed in it. - Which pour it is: strip footings, a grade beam, or footing and wall together
- The width and depth you dug, and a yardage figure you have already added waste to
- Where the verticals stand, and whether the cage runs unbroken along the length
- How much of the run steps down, and how steep the ground is between road and trench
- Whether the inspection has already happened, since that usually sets the date
