It is a placing spec, not a strength grade
The trouble this term causes is that people hear it as a grade, something you order instead of the strength somebody told you to pour. It is not. Strength and pumpability are two separate items and both belong on the same ticket. A footing order and a garage floor order are not the same thing to begin with, and neither one turns into the other because a hose is involved.
What the word actually names is a design decision made at the batch plant. Once the plant knows a load is being placed with a line pump rather than sliding down a chute, their mix design people proportion the sand, the stone and the paste for that trip. Same strength on the ticket, same materials in the drum, different design behind it.
The other thing it gets mistaken for is a wet load
The second wrong picture is that a pump mix means a soupy one. Loose concrete is easier to push right up until the load quits behaving as a single material, and past that point the mortar goes on ahead while the stone gathers behind it. That separation is where a good share of packed lines actually begin.
Stiff fails the other way, forcing the machine and dragging against the hose wall instead of sliding along it. Between those two failures sits a workable middle, and the batch plant is the only place anybody reaches it honestly, with proportions and admixtures rather than a garden hose. Water put in at the site buys handling and pays for it in strength, and that trade does not run backwards.
The plant designs it. The order has to say so.
None of that happens unless somebody says the word. A plant builds to what is on the order, and a load meant for an open chute has no reason to account for friction, because sliding down steel has hardly any. So the first requirement of a pump mix is not a number at all. It is a line on the ticket saying the concrete is being placed with a line pump.
The second useful item on that order is which line size is coming, because the top stone size gets picked against a real bore. We run 2.5 inch and 3 inch line, so that is what the plant hears. Air entrainment for exterior work, any fiber in the load, and any admixture that shifts the set clock forwards or back belong in the same conversation, since every one of them changes how the material behaves under pressure.
Whose mix it is depends on whose pour it is
On work we form, place and finish, the mix conversation never lands on the customer. Specifying it and ordering it are our job, and so is the call to the plant on a morning when a load turns up wrong. When we do the pumping for another crew, the mix stays theirs: their supplier, their spec, their ticket. What we add is an early opinion instead of a late one. Catching a load that will not pump costs a phone call. Finding it out at the hopper costs the morning.
