The one spot that never gets a rest
Most of a pasture gets grazed and moved on. A feed bunk does not. The same twenty or thirty feet of ground takes hooves at every feeding, all winter, in every kind of weather, and it never gets a season off to firm back up. Add wet feed dropped from the bunk and manure that builds up faster than anywhere else on the place, and that strip of ground turns into a bowl of mud long before the rest of the field does.
A concrete pad does not fix the mud somewhere else. It takes that one heavily used strip out of the mud problem entirely, because concrete does not soften, rut, or hold water the way churned dirt does.
Concrete against a gravel apron: the real choice
Not every feeding spot needs a poured pad, and we will tell you when it does not. The honest comparison comes down to how much traffic that one spot takes and how long you need it to hold up without redoing it.
- A gravel apron, kept up with fresh stone, handles a small herd or a feeding spot used only part of the year. It costs less up front and it is work you can do yourself.
- Gravel still moves and works down into the mud underneath over a season or two of heavy standing traffic, so it wants fresh stone added on a schedule.
- A poured pad is the call where the same ground feeds a herd daily, year round, or where the mud has already gotten bad enough that gravel keeps disappearing into it.
- Concrete is also the right call anywhere you plan to scrape manure off the surface with a tractor bucket, since a blade drags gravel away and leaves bare dirt behind it.
What the pad has to survive
A feed pad is not built like a patio. It takes hooves standing in the same spot for hours, a skid steer or tractor scraping across it to push feed up or clear manure, and the same freeze and thaw cycles as any outdoor slab in this part of Virginia. That means a properly compacted stone base under it, the same way we build a shop floor or a driveway, because a slab is only as good as the ground it sits on.
For the mix, we spec strength to what will cross it. An air entrained mix built for freeze thaw is standard on any outdoor farm slab, since a feed pad is exposed to the weather every day of the year the way a garage floor under a roof is not.
Where the pad meets the rest of the yard
A feed pad sits right next to manure, wash water, and often a working herd moving around it while we form and pour, which are their own separate concrete questions with their own answers.
