Your car is sitting in the street, and the driveway looks ready
The forms are off, the surface looks finished, and your car has been parked at the curb since the crew left. It is tempting to just pull in, especially if the slab has been sitting for a couple of days already and looks completely done.
You were probably walking across it the day after the pour, which makes the rest of the wait feel arbitrary. Looks are not the test here. A slab can look and feel finished while curing is still doing the work that lets it carry a vehicle without taking a mark, and on a standard residential driveway that lands at about seven days.
Seven days is not a switch that flips. It is the point where a passenger car stops being a load worth planning around, on a driveway poured to a normal residential thickness, in ordinary weather. A hard cold snap in that first week slows the reaction down and moves the date later, which is why the crew gives you a date for your pour instead of a rule that covers everybody's.
Seven days is the car answer, not the truck answer
Seven days covers a passenger car and stops there. A loaded truck, a camper, or a piece of equipment puts much more weight on a much smaller footprint, and that load waits on the slab reaching close to full strength rather than on the calendar hitting a week. If something like that is coming, it is its own question with its own answer, and the wait is measured in weeks rather than days.
What the first pull-in should look like
The first use is the one that matters most, because the surface is at its youngest and anything it takes then stays. Line the car up out in the street so you can come in straight, and let it roll onto the slab with the steering wheel already where you want it. Do the turning on the road, or once the car is moving, never with the tires planted in one place.
Then park toward the middle. That rounded lip running around the perimeter, shaped with an edging tool while the concrete was still soft, has less concrete under it and nothing beside it to lean on. A wheel that clips it on the way in, or a tire left sitting on it, is asking the weakest few inches of the driveway to hold up a corner of the car.
Backing out deserves the same care as pulling in. Come off the slab straight and turn once the tires are on the road. It is a habit worth keeping for the first few weeks, and it costs you nothing to hold to it.
- Turn with the car rolling, never with a tire planted and twisting in one spot
- Keep the wheels off the rounded perimeter lip, coming and going
- Sweep gravel and grit off the surface before you park on it
- Give a vehicle with a slow oil or fluid drip somewhere else to sit for the first few weeks
What a mark on a young slab actually looks like
When a driveway does get used early, the result is rarely dramatic. The slab does not break under a car. What you get is a mark on the surface, in one of two or three predictable places, and it stays.
A tire that twisted while standing still leaves a curved scuff, often a shade darker than the concrete around it, with the texture flattened inside the arc. On a broom finish that shows up plainly, because the shallow grooves that give a driveway its grip are exactly what a pivoting tire wipes away. It is cosmetic, it does not spread, and it also does not sand out.
The edge is where anything worse turns up. A wheel run up onto the perimeter of a young slab can crumble a short run of that rounded lip and leave a rough bite out of a clean line. A vehicle that sits and drips in those first weeks can leave a stain that soaks in rather than sitting on top, because concrete is at its most porous while it is still curing.
None of that is a reason to call us on its own.
