Before the crew shows up, wind is part of the weather call
We watch the forecast for a pour day the same way we watch it for rain and cold, and a hard, steady wind is part of that read, especially paired with low humidity or full sun. Wind on its own rarely cancels a pour the way rain or a hard freeze does, but a windy, dry, sunny day changes how we plan the day, not whether we show up.
On a day like that we schedule to get concrete on the ground and finished before the wind and sun team up on it, which usually means starting earlier rather than later.
While the crew is placing and finishing
Once concrete is on the ground, wind is working on the surface the whole time the crew is out there. It speeds up evaporation the same way it dries a sidewalk puddle faster than a still day would, except here the water leaving is water the slab still needs for a few hours yet. If the surface dries faster than bleed water can rise to replace it, the top skin shrinks while the concrete underneath has not caught up, and that mismatch is what opens a plastic shrinkage crack, usually a short, random line rather than one that follows a joint.
That is also why timing matters more on a windy day. The crew reads the concrete rather than the clock and moves through screeding, floating and edging without letting the surface sit exposed longer than it needs to.

Right after finishing, curing steps get moved up
This is where a windy pour actually looks different from a calm one. A curing compound or a wet cure goes on sooner on a breezy day, because the whole point is sealing that surface moisture in before the wind has a chance to pull too much of it out. On a still, humid day we have more room to wait; on a dry, windy one, that window is shorter and we do not leave it sitting open.
Wind blowing debris, leaves, or dust onto a fresh surface is a separate, smaller nuisance. It is worth keeping in mind if you are watching the pour, but it is not the reason wind matters here.
What wind does not change
It does not weaken the mix, change the psi it will reach, or affect how deep the slab goes. A pour finished properly on a windy day cures to the same strength as one finished on a calm one. What wind changes is timing and technique on our end, not what the concrete is capable of once it is placed right.
