What you are actually looking at
Two different things get called fading, and telling them apart matters. True pigment fade happens early, mostly in the first year or two, and then settles into a stable tone. A slab that keeps getting duller year after year, long after that early settling period, is almost never still fading in the pigment sense. It is a sealer that has worn through, and the flat, chalky look people describe as fade is usually the surface losing its protective sheen, not the color underneath actually leaving.
Sun is the biggest cause, and it is normal
Ultraviolet light breaks down pigment at the surface the same way it fades a deck, a car's paint, or outdoor furniture. It only ever reaches the top of the slab, so whether the color is integral color batched through the full depth of the mix or a hardener broadcast onto the surface, the sun works on the same thin layer either way. An integral pour just has more of the same pigment sitting underneath, unaffected, once that top layer has settled. Most of that shift happens inside the first two seasons a slab is exposed, as the newest, most vivid layer of color settles into its long-term tone. Traffic adds its own texture to the picture, burnishing the high points of a stamped surface while the low points hold their darker color, which reads as depth rather than damage.
None of that is a defect. It is simply what pigmented concrete does outdoors, and it is the reason we will not promise that a slab will look the same in year five as it did on pour day. What we can promise is that the shift is predictable and it levels off.

The other cause: a sealer that has worn thin
Sealer is what carries the color once the initial UV settling is done. It is a consumable, not a one-time coating, and it wears off with sun and foot traffic over roughly two to three years, sooner in full sun or under trees that drop sap and tannin. Once the sealer has worn through, the surface goes flat and dusty looking, and it reads exactly like fading even though the pigment underneath is unchanged.
The fix in that case is a recoat, not a new pour. A clean, fully dry surface and two thin coats of sealer over the old color usually bring the depth right back, because what was actually missing was the wear layer, not the color.
What is not normal
Blotchy or uneven lightening in specific patches, rather than a slab that dulled evenly all over, is worth a closer look rather than assuming it is ordinary fade. A chalky white bloom on the surface is usually efflorescence, a salt deposit working out of the concrete, and it typically clears with cleaning rather than pointing to any real color loss. If a slab looks patchy in a way that a simple wash and reseal does not correct, that is a good question to bring to your estimate call instead of guessing at it.
