The forecast in front of you is the actual question
Somebody asking this is usually looking at a week in late fall with a cold night in the middle of it, and a pour they would rather not push into spring. That is a reasonable thing to want. We pour most of the year here and work around the forecast instead of around the season.
What the pump contributes to that is small and useful. It does not care about the temperature the way fresh concrete does, and it gets material into the forms faster and more evenly than a chute and a wheelbarrow crew would, which shortens the window where a slab is sitting there green and exposed. Everything else on the list below is about the concrete.
Cold slows the set, and a slow set stretches the whole day
Concrete gains strength through a chemical reaction, and that reaction runs slower when it is cold. A slab that would be ready to finish by late morning in June can sit there refusing to firm up all afternoon in November. Nothing is wrong with it. It is just running on a different clock.
That matters for scheduling more than for quality. Finishers wait longer, the day runs later, and the light goes earlier than it did in the summer. It is one of the reasons a winter pour gets a start time picked on purpose rather than whenever the plant can load.
A freeze on green concrete is the damage you cannot undo
This is the one that decides whether a date holds. Concrete that has not set yet is still full of free water. Freeze that water and it expands inside a material with no strength to resist it, and the surface comes apart. It does not show up as a crack you can fill later. It shows up as a top that never was any good, on a slab you pour twice.
So a slab that goes down late in the year gets protected once it is placed, and blankets are the ordinary way that is done. Curing does not stop mattering in the cold either. It matters more, because the slab needs to be kept warm enough to keep gaining strength through the first nights.
Air entrainment is a separate thing and it is about every winter after this one. Those tiny bubbles give water somewhere to expand into when it freezes in a finished slab, instead of pushing the surface off from underneath. On exterior work at this elevation it is not optional, and for most of what gets poured here we spec a 4,000 PSI air-entrained mix built for Virginia freeze-thaw.
Frozen ground under the slab is its own problem
Concrete does not go down on frozen subgrade. Ground that is frozen when the slab is placed will thaw underneath it later, and the support the slab was poured on is not the support it ends up with. What was solid in the morning becomes soft and uneven a week on, and the slab has to bridge the difference on its own.
The same physics is behind frost heave in the ground around a footing, which is why work that carries a building gets set below the ground that moves. What that depth is where you live is a question for your building official, not for a web page.
What the cold changes about the line itself
The machine and the hose handle cold weather fine. What changes is the clock. Concrete standing still in a line stiffens, and it stiffens faster when the load is carrying something that speeds the set. Late in the year an accelerator is the usual admixture on a ticket, and the plant is the right place to decide about it, but it shortens how long anything can sit in the hose waiting on the next truck.
So truck spacing gets talked about alongside yardage more carefully in December than it does in June. The line still gets primed before any concrete goes through it, water still has to be on site for that and for washing out, and the washout spot still gets agreed on before anybody starts. None of that goes away because it is cold, it just gets planned earlier in the morning.
When we tell you to wait
Sometimes the honest answer is that the week is wrong and the pour should move. A hard freeze on the night after, ground that has not come out of it, or steady cold rain during the hours the finishers need are all reasons to pick another day. We would rather move a date than hand you a slab with a surface nobody can fix.
If the project can wait for a better window, we will say so plainly. If it cannot, tell us what is driving the date, because a footing under a building going up is a different conversation from a patio that could just as easily go in come spring.
