If a shovel hits rock a few inches down
Some lots around here have thin topsoil over ledge rock, and the first sign is usually a shovel or a fence post auger stopping hard well short of where you expected. People sometimes assume that is bad news for a pour. It is closer to the opposite. Rock that has been sitting there for geological ages is not going anywhere under the weight of a driveway or a patio.
Why rock behaves differently than dirt or clay
The problem with dirt and clay is settling. Loose soil compacts more over time, and clay swells and shrinks with moisture. Both of those movements happen after the slab is down, and that movement is what cracks concrete from below. Solid rock does neither. It does not compress further and it does not swell, so a slab that sits evenly on rock is sitting on the most stable ground you could ask for.
What a rock site actually needs before forms go up
The work on a rock site is different, not less. Rock outcrops are almost never one flat plane. There are high spots, low pockets, and seams, and a slab poured directly over that unevenness would have thin, weak spots wherever it barely covers a high point and thick spots wherever it fills a low one.
So we grade the site the same way we would any other: cut or work around high spots where we can, and bring low spots up to a consistent grade with crusher run stone, run through a full compaction pass. That gives the slab a uniform thickness across the whole pour instead of a surface that is four inches deep in one spot and half an inch deep six feet away. Rock is its own subgrade in the spots where it sits at the right elevation already, which is part of why it makes such a solid base.

Water has to go somewhere
Rock does not absorb water the way soil does, so runoff moves across the surface rather than soaking in. That is fine as long as the grading accounts for it. We set the finished grade so water sheds off the slab and away from it, the same as we would on any site, rather than letting it pool against an edge where rock keeps it from draining down and away.
What changes if only part of the site is rock
A single footprint sitting half on ledge rock and half on soil is not unusual around here, especially on sloped ground where an outcrop breaks the surface partway up a bank. That mixed condition is not a reason to change the plan, but it is a reason to grade carefully, because rock and soil do not behave the same way under a slab and the transition between them is exactly where uneven support could show up later if it is not handled right.
We walk the whole footprint before we quote, not just the parts that are easy to read, so the base gets built to whatever is actually under each section instead of one guess applied across the board.
