The one long day people mean by pour day
When somebody asks whether a pour can happen in one day, they usually mean the day the trucks come. That day is one day, start to finish, and it has to be. Concrete gets placed, screeded, floated, edged and finished on the same day it arrives, because it will not hold still and wait for a better morning.
On ordinary residential flatwork the placing is often done by late morning. The crew does not leave then. Finishing runs on the concrete's clock rather than yours, and the joints go in within that first day. So plan on people being on your property for most of it even if the last truck pulls out early.
Concrete will not wait overnight
The reason a slab cannot be split across two days is what happens where fresh concrete meets concrete that has already set. That seam is a cold joint. It does not knit back together, and it leaves a permanent weak line through the slab, so a pour that has started gets finished.
That is also why the front end matters so much. Once a load is on the road there is no pausing the job to go re-stake a form that was not set hard enough or to run for more stone. Anything that can be settled ahead of time gets settled ahead of time, which is the real reason the concrete day looks so simple from the outside.
The days in front of pour day are the ones that move
What most people are really asking is how many days there will be a crew and a machine in the yard. On flatwork that is usually a few days, not weeks, and only one of them is loud.
- Staking the outline, so you can look at the real footprint before it is concrete
- Cutting the grade so water leaves the slab away from the house
- Stone base spread and packed until it stops moving underfoot
- Forms set and staked, then mesh or rebar tied and lifted onto chairs
- The pour, the finish and the joints, all inside one day
Pours that take more than one day on purpose
Some work is built to go down in stages, and that is not a delay. Footings get poured, then walls, then a slab, with forms and steel set in between each one. Steps and landings are often their own pour. A garage slab and the apron out to the drive can be one pour or two, depending on how the joints are laid out.
A monolithic pour, where a thickened edge and the slab go down together as one piece, is the opposite move, and it exists precisely to keep a cold joint out of a place it does not belong. Which way your job goes gets decided at the estimate, not on the morning.
What stretches a one day pour into a long one
Access is the usual culprit. If a loaded ready-mix truck can back to the forms, concrete goes in fast. If it cannot, the concrete travels on hose, and we bring our own trailer line pump on 2.5 inch or 3 inch line with an operator at the machine and a hose hand at the placing end. That is how a back yard or a basement floor gets poured when no truck is getting anywhere near the forms. It is still one day, it is just a longer one.
Heat is the other one. Summer pours start early, because concrete sets faster when it is hot and a crew chasing a slab that is firming up ahead of them will not give you the finish you paid for. Cold does the reverse. The crew waits longer for the slab to reach the window where a finish will take, and the day runs late on the back end instead of the front.
